Traditional Bat Box
Traditional Bat Box
- Designed for small crevice dwelling bats especially pipistrelles.
- Grooved landing ladder continues internally.
- Precision cut FSC certified panels for dry, draught free, long-lasting box.
- 20mm entrance slot to deter birds but suits small bats.
- Easily changed to a single chamber bat box by sliding the internal divider out.
Our Traditional Bat Box is designed for those bat species which would naturally roost in crevices. It is especially suitable for both Common Pipistrelles and Soprano Pipistrelles. These two species are the most abundant bats in the UK and most frequently use bat boxes.
This bat box is supplied with two parallel crevices but if you'd rather provide a box for bats which prefer a larger roosting chamber such as noctules then the internal divider is easy to remove. To remove the internal divider just unscrew the single screw holding the roof down, remove the roof and the internal divider simply slides out.
Designed taking into account our 12 years’ experience of making batboxes, with the benefit of customer feedback, the latest scientific thinking and advice from experts on British bats. The key features include:
- 20mm entrance slot is ideal for bats but deters birds.
- Close fitting panels and roof (precision cut by computer controlled equipment) for restricted airflow and improved heat retention.
- Bat ladder at base of box continues inside box to ensure bats find it easy to access and move around within the box.
- Easy and safe to erect box on walls or trees - light weight with 2 screw holes for mounting.
- Easy (1 screw) to remove roof for cleaning or inspection where permitted
- Manufactured in exterior grade FSC Certified Exterior grade plywood
Bat boxes can be mounted on both buildings and trees. Try to position your box as high as possible in a sheltered sunny place. Ideally, several boxes should be put up facing in different directions to provide a range of conditions. Bats need time to find and explore new homes, and it may be several years before boxes have residents – be patient! Droppings on the landing area, stains around the lower parts of the box and chittering noises from inside on warm afternoons and evenings are signs of occupation.

In partnership with The Nestbox Company
A family-run business, supporting UK wildlife since 1996.
nature first since 1996
We aim for our boxes to provide the best accommodation for wildlife and our primary concern with all our products is that they should be designed appropriately for their target species.
Our boxes replicate as far as possible the conditions which are found in natural nest and roost sites.
designed by experts
Before we design any box we consider the requirements of the proposed inhabitants through reviews of published studies and consultation with experts in their field.
Combined with our experience of designing and manufacturing boxes and customer feedback we produce what we hope are boxes which offer the best accommodation for wildlife.
During the development of our products we are grateful to have received input of various kinds from many sources including, amongst others, the RSPB, the Barn Owl Trust, the University of Warwick, ZSL London Zoo, Staffordshire University, the Bat Conservation Trust, Aston University, the People's Trust for Endangered Species, Coventry University and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.

The Nestbox Company is run by father and sons; Peter, Tristan and Damian.
We manufacture our products in our own rural workshops, and combine modern production technology, with traditional hand finishing.
