Made in Britain
  • Our tawny owl box provides a safe and comfortable nest site for these charismatic owls.
  • Manufactured from precision cut FSC certified exterior grade plywood to provide a long lasting owl box.
  • Each nest box features a well drained floor and hatch providing easy access to the nesting area.
  • The Tawny Owl Nest Box is best sited in woodland where providing an artificial nest site can be hugely beneficial for this species.

Tawny owls are the most abundant owl in the UK, typically found in deciduous and mixed woodland. They will also inhabit urban areas where wooded parks or large gardens provide attractive habitat.

As a cavity nesting species they will naturally use large cavities in trees. However in our highly modified landscape, available large tree cavities are often rare and putting up a tawny owl nest box can provide a nest site where there is a shortage of natural sites.

Our Tawny Owl Nest Box may appear strange as it is more like a tube than a box - but this is just the way that tawny owls prefer them. It is designed to replicate a hollow branch or tree cavity that would be used naturally. These owl boxes are best strapped or fixed to the underside of a branch at an angle of about 45 degrees to the vertical with a clear flight path to the entrance. Alternatively, they can be fixed to the trunk of a tree by screwing a diagonal batten onto the middle of the nest box, and then fixing the ends of this batten to the tree.

These tawny owl nest boxes are designed to provide the best accommodation for Tawny Owls and feature:

  • Well drained floor
  • Open roof (just as the owls prefer)
  • Easy access hatch for cleaning out the nest box at the end of the season
  • Manufactured from precision cut panels of FSC certified exterior grade plywood and sprayed with a water-based non-toxic preservative to create a long lasting bird box.

Please Note: Tawny Owls have a reputation for particularly vigorous protection of the area around the nest so their boxes are best sited somewhere quiet and the birds not disturbed whilst nesting.

nature first since 1996

We aim for our boxes to provide the best accommodation for wildlife and our primary concern with all our products is that they should be designed appropriately for their target species.

Our boxes replicate as far as possible the conditions which are found in natural nest and roost sites.

designed by experts

Before we design any box we consider the requirements of the proposed inhabitants through reviews of published studies and consultation with experts in their field.

Combined with our experience of designing and manufacturing boxes and customer feedback we produce what we hope are boxes which offer the best accommodation for wildlife.

During the development of our products we are grateful to have received input of various kinds from many sources including, amongst others, the RSPB, the Barn Owl Trust, the University of Warwick, ZSL London Zoo, Staffordshire University, the Bat Conservation Trust, Aston University, the People's Trust for Endangered Species, Coventry University and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.

made in britain

We started making nest boxes in 1996 based in a shed in Herefordshire. Since then, we’ve grown in size to become one of the largest producers of roost, nest, and wildlife boxes in the UK.

The Nestbox Company is run by father and sons; Peter, Tristan and Damian.

We manufacture our products in our own rural workshops, and combine modern production technology, with traditional hand finishing.
