Betula Pubescens is commonly known as downy birch, with other common names including moor birch, white birch, European white birch or hairy birch.

The downy birch will grow to 10 to 20m with a slender crown and smooth but dull grey-white bark. Downy birch is more upright than silver birch, with shoots that are smooth grey-brown in colour and leaves that are more finely serrated than a Silver Birch.

Downy birch provides food and habitat for more than 300 insect species.

Care Instructions

We only sell potted trees as we have found these have the best chance of survival in most situations, allowing you to plant trees throughout the year.

The cooler, wetter months are always the best time to plant a tree and allow it to establish a new root system whilst it remains fairly dormant.  Potted trees can also be planted successfully throughout the spring and summer if they are well looked after.

We recommend mulching and regular watering during the drier periods in the first year or so of growth.
